Fantastic Goodwood Revival for Wills - 27.09.2012

The 15th Goodwood Revival was another busy event for Roger with 3 races to focus on over the course of the weekend.

In the St Mary's Trophy Roger returned with the crowd pleasing Gaz Volga. Sharing with Brendon Hartleyin an all Kiwi team the duo were up against the likes of Rob Huff, Kenny Brack, Andy Wallace and Derek Bell. In part one Brendon finished 10th overall having had a good race with Tim Harvey despite never having sat in the car before. For race two Roger finished 11th overall, netting the pair a combined result of 10th overall.

For the Whitsun Trophy, Roger returned with the McLaren M1B in which he finished 2nd in 2010. With unfinished business Roger was very motivated to try and go one better and was out in the lead of the race with 3 laps to go. Unfortunately Roger dropped a wheel on the outside of the fast Lavant corner and dropped back to 4th behind "works" McLaren driver Chris Goodwin. By the start of the final lap he had made his way back past Goodwin to take 3rd place, but the Lola T70 of Gary Pearson and Chinook of Jay Esterer were just out of reach and 3rd place had to suffice. Roger commented: "To have a podium at Goodwood is always a fantastic result, but this is a race I really want to win. I have had 2 2nd's and a 3rd in the Whitsun Trophy, so to add a win would be a very nice. I hope Lord March invites me back next year to have another attempt!"

Roger's final race of the weekend was in the ex Graham Hill Lotus 16. After struggling with gearbox issues in qualifying Roger ended up 14th on the grid. At the race start the second row sitting BRM of Gary Pearson stalled and the charging pack got tangled up with 5 or 6 cars getting involved in an accident. Roger had nowhere to go and rode up the back of the Lotus 18 of Paul Smeeth. With the race red flagged and little damage to the Lotus, Roger took the re-start. Unfortunately the gearbox issues from qualifying presented themselves again and Roger retired after 3 laps.

Elsewhere there were two other Wills' racing at the Revival with George and Zoe taking part in the Setterington Cup for Austin J40's. In race 1, George took 12th and Zoe 16th. In race 2 George was 10th and Zoe 8th. The pair finished a fine 11th and 12th respectively in the combined result.
