Highs and Lows at Spa. - 28.09.2012

The Spa 6 hours was a weekend of ups and downs for Roger Wills and fellow Kiwi Brendon Hartley.

Competing in 7 races in 6 cars the highlight of the weekend was the Spa 6 Hour race in which the duo were racing in the ex Peter Sutcliffe GT40 P/1009.

The pair had issues in qualifying after a gearbox failure and qualified in 14th position. After a fantastic first two stints they had a 90 second lead going into the final hour. As the end of race approached, Roger had further gear selection issues which manifested themselves into a position where the gearbox wouldn't select any gears. With 10 minutes to go Roger pitted and dropped back to 5th. Of the result, Roger said "I am totally devastated to have got so close and just missed out on the win."

Sunday's World Sports Car Masters race made up for the disappointment of Saturday night. At the end of the one hour enduro it was a McLaren 1-2 with Roger and Brendon leading home Gregor Fisken and Peter Hardman in their similar M1C.

The pair also netted a podium in the Mercury Cyclone in TopHat and a class win in the Mini Cooper in the U2TC event.

A 4th place finish was the best they could manage in the Lotus XV.

In the Cooper T51 Roger drove solo and finished both races in the top 10 after struggles with a misfire.

The Spa 6 Hours event finishes the year for Roger and plans are already underway for 2013.
